What Is a Built-Up Roof?

A built-up roofing system, also known as a BUR system, is a standard flat or low-sloped roof system regarded for its exceptional protection. Because of this, BUR has been a staple of commercial roofing for over 100 years. We install BUR systems by adding alternating layers of bitumen or tar and supporting roof materials over a waterproof built-up roof membrane on the roof deck. The redundant layering of BUR on flat roofs creates a water and weather-resistant roof. To prevent damage from UV rays or debris, built-up roof systems have a top layer of gravel or small stones.
